Orpheus With His Lute (accomp) |
| The Shakespeare collection has been devised and collated as a demonstration of the development of western music by following stylistic, melodic and harmonic changes as composers set to music the words of 'The Bard of Avon', sometimes for new productions of the plays, but often just in the tradition of setting poems in a musical matrix to further realise the meaning of the words. The four centuries which have passed have seen quite dramatic changes in music and these songs are an accessible way to explore and experience these changes. (cf the journey of Full Fathom Five from Robt. Johnson (1612) to Igor Stravinsky!!) The songs have been selected from standard collections of Shakespeare songs (Chappell, B&H etc)as well as from composer collections (Arne,Moeran,Warlock,Stravinsky,Dankworth(Words for Music)) Some Dankworth songs have been transposed to keep them in the range of standard voices. |
